On September 11, 1973, Chile's armed forces overthrew socialist president Salvador Allende and his Popular Unity coalition government. Military forces bombed the presidential palace, La Moneda, where Allende died that day. A military junta took power, and Augusto Pinochet subsequently consolidated a dictatorship that suppressed political opposition and committed widespread human rights abuses.
