The Battle of Chaldiran took place on 23 August 1514 between the Ottoman and Safavid empires. Sultan Selim I defeated Shah Ismail I with a larger army equipped with artillery. The victory halted Safavid expansion westward and allowed Ottoman forces to briefly occupy the Safavid capital, Tabriz.
