From July 1942 to February 1943, German and Soviet forces fought for Stalingrad in one of the Second World War’s bloodiest battles. After months of fierce urban combat, a Soviet counteroffensive encircled Germany’s Sixth Army and forced its surrender. The defeat ended Germany’s 1942 summer offensive and passed the strategic initiative on the Eastern Front to the Soviet Union.
