The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest took place from 8 to 11 September AD 9, possibly near modern Kalkriese in Germany. A Germanic alliance led by Arminius ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions and their auxiliaries under Publius Quinctilius Varus. Known as the Varian Disaster, the defeat severely undermined Roman ambitions to conquer Germania beyond the Rhine.
