The Battle of Tsushima took place on 27–28 May 1905 in the Tsushima Strait during the Russo-Japanese War. Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō’s Japanese Combined Fleet intercepted Russian warships attempting to reach Vladivostok after a long voyage from the Baltic Sea. Japanese gunfire and torpedo attacks destroyed or captured most of the Russian fleet, delivering a decisive victory. The defeat helped push Russia toward peace negotiations and the Treaty of Portsmouth.
