The Congress of Vienna brought European diplomats together from September 1814 to June 1815 after Napoleon's initial defeat. Chaired by Austrian statesman Klemens von Metternich, the negotiations sought lasting peace through a balance of power. The settlement redrew borders and reinforced monarchical authority while seeking to contain revolutionary movements.
