Emperor Constantine I convened the First Council of Nicaea in present-day İznik, Turkey, from May until the end of July 325. The assembled bishops rejected Arius’s teachings and affirmed that the Son shared the same divine essence as the Father. They adopted the original Nicene Creed, called for a common observance of Easter, and issued twenty canons governing church life.
