In 1928, Scottish physician Alexander Fleming observed that mould contaminating a bacterial culture at London's St Mary's Hospital inhibited nearby bacterial growth. His experiments showed that the mould released an antibacterial substance, which he named penicillin in 1929. Later, Howard Florey, Ernst Chain, and their Oxford colleagues developed methods to turn this discovery into an effective treatment.
