On 30 April 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. The fall followed emergency evacuations of American personnel and Vietnamese civilians, and South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh surrendered. The event ended the Vietnam War and paved the way for Vietnam's formal reunification in 1976.
