The Treaty of Nerchinsk was signed on 27 August 1689, becoming China's first formal treaty with a Western power. Songgotu represented the Kangxi Emperor, while Fyodor Golovin represented Russian Tsars Peter I and Ivan V. The agreement settled frontier disputes following fighting at Albazin and established a boundary between the two states. It also enabled trade, with Latin serving as the authoritative language of the treaty.
